By default, videos recorded using Game DVR are automatically stored in the “Videos” folder on your C drive. Unless you only record your games occasionally or have a big enough C drive capacity, the video recordings will quickly fill up the system drive. This is especially true if you are using an SSD (Solid-State Drive) as your system drive. So if you don’t want to receive the infamous “Low Disk Space” warning, here’s how to change the default Game DVR captures’ folder location.

Change Game DVR Captures’ Folder Location

Changing the default Game DVR save location is nothing difficult. To start, open the File Explorer and navigate to “C:\Users<username>\Videos.”

Here you will see a folder called “Captures.” This is the folder which is used by Game DVR to save the recorded gameplay or video. Right-click on the folder and select the option “Properties.”

The above action will open the folder properties window. Navigate to the “Location” tab and click on the “Move” button.

Now you can choose any folder in any drive to save the captured footage. If you want to, you can also create a new folder. To create a new folder, click on the option “New Folder” appearing on the top navigation bar.

Name the new folder, select it and click on the “Select Folder” button. In my case I named my folder as “Captures.”

In the main folder properties window, you will see the new folder path. Just click on the “OK” button.

You will be prompted whether you would like to move the files from the old location to the new location. Simply click on the “Yes” button, and Windows will move any files in the old location to the new location.

Depending on the size of the folder, it may take some time to move the folder. Once it is done, you will see that all the files are moved to the new location.

That’s all there is to do. You’ve successfully changed the default Game DVR save location to the folder of your choice. You can check that in the Game DVR settings. To do that right-click on the Start menu and select the option “Settings.” Alternatively, you can also press the keyboard shortcut “Win + I.”

In the Settings app open the Gaming section.

Navigate to the “Game DVR” section in the left panel, and you will see the new save location on the right panel under the “Game DVR” section. You can use the “Open Folder” button to open the new capture folder.

If you ever want to restore the default save location for Game DVR, open the folder properties and click on the “Restore Default” button.

As soon as you click on the button, the previous location will be restored. Click on the “OK” button to save the changes.
