Why Use the Night Light Feature in Windows 10?

Generally, our monitors or screens emit blue light. This bright blue light imitates the bright yet cool blue light from the Sun. When using the desktop or laptop at nighttime, the blue light emitting from the screen disrupts our internal body clock and reduces the sleep hormone called “melatonin.” This strains your eyes and causes sleeplessness and other eye-related problems. To deal with this, much like F.lux, Night Light changes the color temperature of your screen to reduce strain and allows you to sleep better.

Enable Night Light in Windows 10

Enabling and configuring the Night Light feature in Windows 10 is easy and straightforward. To start, click on the Notifications icon and then click on the option “All Settings.” Alternatively, you can also use the keyboard shortcut “Win + I” to open the Settings app.

After opening the Settings app, click on the “System” option.

In the System window select the “Display” tab on the left panel and toggle the button under “Night Light.” This action enables the Night Light feature in Windows 10.

Even though you turned on Night Light, it won’t take effect until nighttime or sunset. The good thing is you can configure the color temperature and scheduling. Click on the option “Night Light Settings.”

Here, use the color slider to set the color temperature. While you are sliding, you will see the real-time representation of how your screen looks when the Night Light mode is active.

Since you only need Night Light at nighttime, you need to schedule it. Scroll down and toggle the button under “Schedule Night Light.” You’ll see two options here: “Sunset to Sunrise” and “Set Hours.” If you select “Sunset to Sunrise,” Windows 10 will use GPS or other location data to configure and schedule Night Light. If you’ve disabled Location services, then Windows will prompt you to enable it. If you’d rather set your own times, then select the option “Set Hours.” Choose your own times from the drop-down menus under “Turn on” and “Turn off.” As you can see from the below image, I’ve configured my Night Light settings to turn on at 7:30 PM and turn off at 7:00 AM.

From this point forward, Night Light will automatically turn on according to your settings. If you want to turn on Night Light regardless of your settings, then click on the Notifications icon, and then click on the “Night Light” button. Alternatively, you can also turn it on from Night Light settings in the Settings app.
