One lesser-known change in iOS 11 is the change of the image format from JPEG to HEIC. When iOS was introduced, this really wasn’t discussed much. However, it can make an impact on the photos you take on your iPhone and iPad. There are both positives and negatives behind the photos being in HEIC. But if you are focused on the negative and need to have the photos changed to the JPG format, or another for that matter, you have options, including Joyoshare HEIC Converter that will take care of the issues quickly and easily.
What Is HEIC?
A new standard for saving photos was introduced: High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF). It uses a more advanced compression method which makes the stored file smaller on your iOS device. However, it offers a higher quality image than JPEGs. HEIC is what Apple calls their version of HEIF. The main positive of the HEIC/HEIF image format is that because it’s compressed and stored in a smaller-sized file, you can save more room on your device. You don’t have to worry as much about running out of room and won’t feel forced into storing your photos in the cloud. The disadvantage is that the HEIC format isn’t widely recognized. You might have a problem uploading HEIC-formatted photos to some websites or third-party software. It’s not a format that’s as widely used as JPEG just yet.
Some Solutions
One solution to the HEIC format is to disable it altogether. You can go into the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and change it so that all your files will be saved to JPG again. However, this will result in larger files once again and your device running out of storage very quickly. You can also save your photos to a third-party storage app such as Dropbox or Google Photos, but not all third-party storage apps handle them the same. Some apps will keep the HEIC format while others will change them to JPG which will possibly lessen the quality. If you store your photos to iCloud, however, once you open them on a Mac or Windows they’ll automatically change to JPG, possibly lessening the quality. Once again, you can adjust the Settings to either have them keep the HEIC format when transferred or transfer them in a compatible format.
The Joyoshare Solution
If you don’t want to worry about losing any quality in your photos, the answer to quickly and easily converting your photos from HEIC to JPEG, or nearly any other format, is to use Joyoshare HEIC Converter. In the Preferences menu, you can choose which folder you want the converted files saved to, and you can also choose what you want the software to do once it’s finished converting your images.
Towards the bottom of the work window you can choose the format. Again, you don’t have to convert files to JPG. You can also convert to PNG, BMP, GIF, WEBP, and TIFF. If you need the file to be a certain resolution, you can set this as well, along with the level of quality you want. To start you just need to drag your HEIC file into the converter window or use the icon in the lower-left to import the file. It should be noted that you cannot convert directly from iCloud. If your files are only stored there, you will need to export them first, but will need to make sure that your Mac doesn’t automatically export to JPEG, as you risk losing quality in your image(s).
Once you drag your image into the converter, it will show up and will tell you the current resolution. All you need to do is click the button on the bottom-right to convert your image. It’s as simple as that.
This is my converted file. I’d like to say you can see here how it hasn’t lost any of the clarity, but to include the image in this article I’ve had to do additional converting after I used Joyoshare and had to change the resolution, so quality may have been lost in that process. However, I can assure you after converting through Joyoshare, every branch in this picture retained its clarity
It’s also possible to batch convert. You only need to select all the files you want to convert and drag them into the converter or use the icon in the lower-left. All your files will be listed in the converter. Again, you only need to click the button on the bottom-right, and it takes care of everything. It’s as simple as that to do batch converting.
This is yet another converted file. Again, clarity may have changed with the additionally converting I had to do after I converted through Joyoshare, but the original converted file retained the clarity of each one of the strands in this garland that’s wrapped around my dog’s head.
