Calendars from Google

The easiest way to add a new calendar to your Google Calendar is to add it directly from the app. There is a small, yet useful collection of calendars available. To add a calendar, click on the plus sign next to “Other Calendars,” then click on “Browse calendars of interest.” You will see a list of calendars to choose from that includes different holiday calendars, a wide variety of sports teams schedules, and an option for the phases of the moon. Choose the ones you want by checking the box. When you do, Google adds the calendar, and you will see a notification confirming it.

Weather

Google Calendar used to have its own weather calendar as part of the service, but it is no longer active. It is still easy to add the weather to your calendar by clicking the “+” button next to “Other calendars” and select “From URL.”

On the next screen add the URL https://ical.wunderground.com/auto/ical/12345.ics, replacing the 12345 with your zip code.

It takes a few moments for the calendar to load, so be patient. Once it is loaded, you can only see it on the monthly view.

Reddit AMA

One of the most popular subreddits on Reddit is the Ask Me Anything subreddit, an open question-and-answer session with notable people. If you are a fan of this subreddit, you can keep track of who is coming up by adding their schedule to your Google Calendar. To add this calendar, visit the AMA calendar online and click on the +GoogleCalendar button.

Television

The website TV Calendar gives you the ability to add two weeks’ worth of television shows to your Google Calendar. It may not be a set-it-and-forget-it solution, but if there are a lot of new shows coming on that you want to remember, and you may find it helpful.

To create a calendar on TV Calendar, you need to create an account. Once you’ve done that, you definitely want to make sure that the time zone is set correctly, since the default is UTC. If you live in the United States, your shows will be on the incorrect day of the week. Browse the schedule, choose the shows you want to track and add them to your favorites. Once you’ve selected the shows, hover over the Account button and click the .iCal entry. This will give you the file of your chosen shows. You can add this file to Google Calendar by clicking the Plus next to other calendars option. Choose “Import” and browse to find the file you downloaded. It will add these events directly to the calendar you have open. Because of this, you may want to make a separate calendar for television shows if you will use this often.

Movies

For you movie buffs out there, you can keep tabs on the nationwide release dates for movies by using the calendar at FirstShowing.net.

Click the button for the current year’s schedule. Then click the +GoogleCalendar in the bottom-right corner of the calendar. When you permit it to be added to your calendar, you will have a list of the movies released each Friday on your calendar.

You’ll have to add the calendar at the beginning of each calendar year to catch the next year’s releases.

Concerts

Create a personalized calendar of concerts by bands you are interested in by visiting Jambase. Sign up for an account, choose your favorite bands, and look for shows near you. Add those shows to your Jambase calendar and then add the calendar to Google Calendar by clicking on the link above your list of shows.
