CheatSheet is a good tiny app for Mac that lets you view all the keyboard shortcuts for an app. It runs in the background and pops up on your screen with a list of shortcuts at the press of a button. Here’s how you can use it on your Mac.
Quickly Finding Keyboard Shortcuts for an App on a Mac
The app is available for free on its official website.
Download the CheatSheet app from its official website on your Mac. Double click on the downloaded archive to extract the app file.
Double click on the CheatSheet app file to launch it. Since the app has been downloaded from outside the App Store you will need to first confirm the prompt that appears on the screen. Click on “Open” to allow your Mac to open the app.
The next prompt asks you to move the app to the Applications folder. Doing so will make the app available in your Launchpad. Click the button that says “Move to Applications Folder,” and the app will be moved into that folder.
Click on Launchpad in your dock, search for and click on CheatSheet, and it will launch.
In order for the app to work, you must enable the Accessibility feature for it in your system preferences. To do that click on the Apple logo in the top left corner on your screen and select “System Preferences…” It will launch the system preferences panel on your machine.
Click on the option that says “Security & Privacy,” as that is where the option that you need to enable is located.
Click on the “Privacy” tab, and it will open. Now click on the lock icon shown in the lower-left corner. You need to do it so that you can modify settings in the panel. You will be prompted to enter your username and password. Enter those details and click on “Unlock.”
Here is where you allow CheatSheet to control your computer, or in other words, allow it to find the keyboard shortcuts for the apps that installed on your Mac. Checkmark the box that says “CheatSheet.” Close the panel when you are done.
Now launch any app to see its keyboard shortcuts. Once the app has launched, hold down the Command key on your keyboard, and you should see all the available keyboard shortcuts for it. In the image below I have launched the Photos app, and the keyboard shortcuts shown are for that app.
Now each time you wish to see keyboard shortcuts for an app, simply hold down the Command key, and they will show up on your screen.
Conclusion
Keyboards shortcuts are great, and it is worth the time to learn them. The app above will help you find shortcuts on your Mac.
